Desperate to Rhyme

Desperate to Rhyme

When you write poetry,
Sometimes you’re just stuck,
Desperate what to rhyme,
With what.

You go through the ABCs
And then you get confused.
Now you look at all those rhyming lists.
You can’t really get enthused!

Why do they suggest words
That really make no sense?
Now why would you want to rhyme
“Sense” with “business lunch expense”?

Many poems don’t rhyme anyway.
Writers don’t even try,
Only those feely-touchy words and phrases,
“tranquil. alarm. tranquil and alarm. why?”

So when desperate to rhyme
Using those words you can’t find,
What do you do?
Don’t think too much and use a little slight of mind.

My Pocket Poem

My Pocket Poem

A poem in my pocket,
A Bible on my desk,
A chapter book on my bed,
My blurry eyes I rest.

Next morning when I see Mom,
She asks me what I’ve read,
“It’s a rhyming poem about Jesus’ life
For ‘Poem in Your Pocket Day’,’’ I said.

I Am So Blessed

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”  (Holy Bible -Proverbs 31:30 – NIV)

I Am So Blessed

Though barely able to move or speak
From confinement in bed she addressed
Her children, amazed and inspired,
Hearing her say, “I am so blessed.”

Her family always supported her
And loved and cared for her each day.
She knew she could depend on them
That they would never break away.

That their mother had
Serenity in her weary days,
Peace passing all understanding –
They gave God praise.

How could she say, “blessed”,
Though ravished with pain?
It was because of whole-souled trust
In Jesus’ holy Name.

This Mother’s Day many of us can say that we are so blessed to have put our faith in Jesus Christ.  I saw this awesome faith in my mother’s daily life.

The Old Country Church

chrch2c- Church - Dusk

The Old Country Church

I remember the old country church,
Just south of town, a mile or two,
Where mama and papa would take me,
I saw children with grown-ups sittin’ on the pews.

Before the preacher preached,
A child I could barely see,
On a chair behind the pulpit,
He sang, “Jesus Loves Me.”

Folks lifting their voices,
Singin’ those grand ole Gospel songs,
Reminding me of heaven,
Where nothin’ is wrong.

Then right after dusk,
It was time for the invitation,
Where many came forward,
For God’s adoration.

I remember the old country church,
And will ‘til I die,
‘Cause we’ll all meet in heaven,
The Church in the sky.

One of my first memories of a church building is a country church, at dusk, right outside my hometown.  We need to remember that the church is not the building, but the people – “the called out ones”.  So, no special building or any building is needed for the church to meet.

I appreciate what Larry Pine wrote in his South Bay Concert News (March) referring to my Poetry Reading on February 6th, 2015, the following:

Mother’s Photo Book

heart-01112 - Mother's Day - I Love You

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Photo Book

Mother pulls her photo book
From the bookshelf by the wall.
She views those dear ones,
Her whole family, all.

She sees her son, then three,
Riding his little car,
Now a lawyer,
Having just passed the bar.

Her daughter is shown,
From college graduated.
She’s working as a nurse,
One who’s highly rated.

There’s Dad in his suit
And Mother right there.
Arm in arm just before church,
What a cool pair!

Mother rubs these photos,
As if alive, seeing the children grow.
She’s glad she spent time with them
Though always on the go.

Time has gone so fast,
But God has taken care.
Memories flow like a river,
As her eyes, tears deliver.

Then, the doorbell rings,
As son and daughter stand,
“Happy Mother’s Day,” they say.
Another visit, oh so grand!

It’s fun to go back and look at old photos.  Sometimes we have so many that it is hard to organize them.  Seeing our family as they used to be is good in seeing how God has helped us.  But it’s best to look forward in faith to how God will guard us and bless us in the future.

I appreciate what Larry Pine wrote in his South Bay Concert News (March) referring to my Poetry Reading on February 6th, 2015, the following:

The Other Side of Ministry

jcsytf10 - Jesus, Same

The Other Side of Ministry

The other side of ministry
Is when you feel dark and drear.
It’s when a person says a prayer
Or gives you some good cheer.

It’s when you’ve given to others
All your life through,
But now you feel the comfort
Of what others do for you.

It may be a word, a thought, a prayer
It may be a song or two.
When you know someone cares,
That someone cares for you.

It ministers to you.
In your heart you feel it there.
The precious love and concern
Despite your desperate despair.

The other side of ministry –
You sit there and now receive
And thank the Lord
For that person, who now you relieves.

Sometimes it’s time to minister to others, and sometimes it is time to be ministered unto.  But whichever way it might be at the time, Jesus is always the same.  What a great promise and comfort!

The Final Poem

The Final Poem
(Matthew 25:21- ERV)

The poet’s mind stood still like a block,
Resembling embers of a fire – soon gone.
Ideas hard to come by,
Now God’s refreshment to wait on.

At once, the author’s name was called,
A strong voice was heard –
“You are a good servant who can be trusted. . . ”
“Share my happiness,” was His Word.

An angel escorted the writer through a gate,
Where the poet walked on streets of gold.
There, no light, but God’s,
As the Bible foretold.

There was no crying,
Nor sickness, nor pain,
Just Love flowing freely
Through the power of Jesus name.

Then as swiftly as the dream had begun,
The poet awakened at the new dawn of light.
The poet’s mind spinning with astonishing,
New glorious ideas to write.
