The Two Hardest Words

The Two Hardest Words

There are two words hardest for the teacher,
As the school year wears right down,
As she gets even closer to her students,
Helping them each achieve a laurel crown.

As she sees them grow physically,
And in spirit, and in mind,
They see her face, radiant with love
For them, and very kind.

But then, after all the lessons,
And the big testing on May 22,
The Field Trip now is over,
And Sports Day, too.

The last day is here with a school BBQ,
T-shirt autographing to remember everyone,
Students say goodbye for the summer,
It’s a lot of controlled chaos – a lot of fun.

As the clock strikes the closing 1:00 pm,
The kids she’ll really miss,
Even now her voice is firm, but a little wavering, too,
She says those two hardest words – “Class Dismissed.”

Good teachers really care about their students.  The last day of school is exciting.  There are many emotions expressed because of the coming of summer vacation and the realization by both students and teacher that they may not see each other again.

I appreciate what Larry Pine wrote in his South Bay Concert News (March) referring to my Poetry Reading on February 6th, 2015, the following:

“The Christian poetry of Charles Mayes added a creative break to the Bethel Hymn Sing. Even poems with motions for Children’s programs . . . ”

Autumn Tree - Front Yard Beauty

Changes

One day in church,
I voiced my prayer
For a sister
Who sits in front of us, right there.

They gave me the microphone
With all heads bowed.
The small congregation laid on hands,
While I prayed aloud.

I knew that God would work
When I prayed that day,
But I didn’t know how
And in what way.

Then the next Sunday
The tables were turned, you see.
For it was that dear Sister
Who was praying for me.

Things change very quickly,
Downs to ups, ups to downs
As you live your life –
From a big smile to a serious frown.

But I do know this
As I hold His hand,
He will help me trust Him
All the way to Gloryland.
