Grandma’s Club House

Grandma’s Club House

Grandma made a Club House
For her grandchildren to delight.
She wanted to be in touch with them
To be remembered when out of sight.

Her loving heart planned it –
Some PVC pipes and curtains.
She built it with her handy hands.
It was appealing to be certain.

So she can tell the stories
From the Bible, so well,
Like David and Goliath
And Jonah and the Whale.

And then a song or two:
Jesus Loves Me.
Jesus Loves all The Little Children
From sin He will set them free.

To get the young kids thinking
About God and all He does,
To bring them close to Jesus
And our Father up above.

They excitedly visit Grandma
To hear the stories, more,
And Grandma’s love of Jesus
Right inside that Club House door.

Grandmas are special people to their grandchildren.  There is a relationship between them which no other person can fill.  When a grandmother has a concern for her grandchildren in teaching them about the Lord, this is a beautiful thing – one which is sacred in God’s sight.

The Best Father

The Best Father

You are the best Father.
We’re thankful for all you do,
From working hard,
To sharing your wisdom, too.

It’s so fun to be around you.
We enjoyed playing Ball and Hopscotch.
You smiled and let us win,
As you carefully watched.

You observed us grow
From little tykes, to big.
You were there for us, attending –
A game, a play, a gig.

In the living room,
Praying for us by name, we saw.
On your knees,
For our God you have reverent awe.

You protected us.
You helped us, in life, get through
This godless world,
As up, up, up we grew.

Now we raise our own kids
Just like you, dear Dad.
God gave you to us.
For this we are so glad.

You are the best Father.
We’re thankful for all you do,
From working hard,
To sharing your wisdom, too.

The Best Mother

The Best Mother

You are the best Mother –
You do things seen and not
To help us all
Do the tasks we ought.

From a baby, raised us.
You fed and clothed us, too.
You even played Dollhouse and Cowboy.
Things a good Mother would do.

It started with a Bible picture book,
Adventure stories filled us with awe.
And later family devotions,
Praying, singing – close to the Lord we draw.

You gave help with Elementary School homework.
Sometimes an aggravated load.
The Science Fair and Wooden Car Race,
Sometimes giving that gentle goad.

The Middle School time –
The awkward years,
You still spent time with us
To volunteer and cheer.

Through High School and College,
You helped encourage us so,
On to careers as teacher and nurse.
You, teary-eyed, loving let us go.

Now as we have our own kids,
Who keep us on the run.
We raise them just like you.
We think back what you’ve done.

You are the best Mother –
You did things seen and not
To help us all
Do the tasks we’d ought.

An Old Christmas Poem

TJ-Openclipart-6-2-color-tree-2-2-16

An Old Christmas Poem

She walks down the sidewalk
Scrawny Christmas tree in hand.
Not big, like her own frame,
Wearing a plain gray dress – not grand.

It’s snowy, the last day of grammar school
Before Christmas vacation.
This “charity” child gets to take it home
Back to her desolation.

The tree decorated with handmade
Red and green ornaments looped.
A construction paper star aloft.
The top branch in a droop.

She trudges barely holding its weight anymore.
Her face deliberate looking dignified,
Glancing here and there for watching eyes.
Walking quickly, resolutely as this tree takes its ride.

It then stands in the small drafty room’s corner
No presents under its limbs,
It looks like her usual Christmas –
Not so happy, pretty grim.

Then a knock at the door –
A gracious man and some helping kids,
From that church down the road.
Some food and presents for these folks on the skids.

Now she walks slowly down the sidewalk,
Unused bright notebook in hand,
Smiling, ready for school,
Wearing a brand new print dress – grand!

Jesus said, “the poor you will always have with you, . . . ” [Holy Bible, Mark 14: 7 – NIV].  An Old Christmas Poem is based on a true story.  It’s one I felt I had to tell, but it was not easy for me to tell. Thanks to the Salvation Army Church and many other churches a multitude of persons are helped during the holidays and year-round.

What can we do?  We can go, give, and pray.  However, if we cannot go, we can give. If we cannot give, we can pray.  Once, when my Sunday School class was discussing supporting a missionary, a lady asserted, “I support them.  I pray.”
