Anniversary 10 – Amen

By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.” Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through individuals, churches, and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing! So complimentary in the common faith!” Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

“I’m sorry that it took me so long to thank you for your wonderful gift of poetry.
As I was reading your poem, [Independence Day] the images of the people celebrating Independence Day and being proud of this day came to me as if I was watching a nice short movie. I was very moved.” Daisuke (Luke) S., Mountain View, CA.

MY APPRECIATION also to Samuel Rondón Acevedo who has done an excellent job translating  some of my poems into Spanish.

“I just read ‘Mistaken Identity.’  It is very moving, and one of your best.”  Joan M.-H., Muskogee, OK.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

“I really enjoy your poetry.  I will start sharing in my Sunday school classes.”  Travis B., Asbury, WV.

LORD WILLING, I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!” Steven C., Oregon.

God bless!

I Prayed For You Today

We have some new followers of this blog!   I’d like to welcome you and prayerfully hope that you will be blessed by the messages of the poems.

[Note: The poem below is not from the book, A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes, 2011.  (The foreword  by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor, International Christian Center, San Jose, California.)]

I Prayed For You Today

I prayed for you today.

I prayed for you today.
I couldn’t be there,
But I prayed for you today.

Your mother’s service –
For peace for you and your brother.
That God would lift you up,
That God would give you comfort.

I prayed for those presiding –
That they would say
Just the right words
To help and bless you.

I prayed thanking God
For your mother’s life,
And her kindness and
Faithfulness to Him.

I prayed thanking God
For sending His Son
So your mother can
Be with Him.

I prayed for you today.
I know He will answer
And comfort you
In every way.

I prayed for you today.

God, Help Me This New Year

Below is a poem from the book, A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes, 2011.  The foreword is by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor, International Christian Center, San Jose, California.

God, Help Me This New Year

Help me to do Your holy will
Throughout this New Year.
Take away all my doubts
And all my fears.

Whether with great or no ability,
Make me available for Your use,
So that my service to You,
You may boost.

Help me to minister
Not to whom I think this year,
But to whom You want,
Both far and near.

Help me to have hope
That only You can give,
As from moment to moment
I, in You, live.

Help me to do Your holy will
Throughout this New Year.
Thank you for taking away all my doubts
And all my fears.

When I Write A Poem – Rabid to Write

As we look forward to 2012, I’d like to share a poem which got left on the “cutting room floor” from A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes, 2011.  The foreword is by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor of International Christian Center San Jose, California.

I’d also like to thank the “Followers” of my blog.

Happy New Year 2012!!!

When I Write A Poem
   (Rabid to Write)

When I right a poem,
It’s really fun you see.
I’d like to show you,
How it goes for me.

First,  there’s the inspiration,
My mind – it can be soooo dead.
To write just at the very time,
When something comes into my head.

Then the writing itself,
Usually doesn’t take to loooong.
Now for the editing –
Spelling first – all right, as I go along.

“How about this verse instead?
I could say this here.
Why don’t I put that in?
I could say this there.”

“Even I don’t know what I mean by this.
But will the reader know?
Why do I try word plays,
When know one really knows?”

“That line’s convoluted,
Is up all twisted.
Those words don’t really rhyme.
Why don’t I use ‘rested?’ ’’

And then I get a call,
I’ll read it to my rep –
The self-publishing one,
She’ll understand it yet.

I offer to read it on the phone,
She says OK (and she’ll ponder).
I read it in my best voice,
Loudly, because she’s far yonder.

She says how wonderful it is –
And then she starts to cry,
It touched her heart so much,
The best, she says, with a sigh.

She’d now like to publish,
For a limited time.
A deal – a sale – but wait –
All my poems for only $999.00.

I was honored to be honored!
So thrilled was I – I gasp!
But this won’t happen,
Because not enough writ, alas.

So I’ll still continue to
To verse right,
Because I love it so,
Even righting way into the night.

This for my own enjoyment,
And if I had my druthers,
To continue to right for my family
And also for many others.

When I right a poem,
It’s really fun you see.
I’ve now shown you,
How it goes for me.

Christmas Morning

Christmas Morning

Christmas morning –
Bells ring.
Christmas morning –
Children sing.

Before gifts
Story read.
Before food
Prayer instead.

Paper flying
Off in a flash.
Thank-yous
In a dash.

Reminding us
Of God’s gift long ago –
Baby presented
His love to show.

Being together,
A big part.
Sharing,
What’s on our heart.

Christmas Morning –
Bells ring.
Christmas morning –
Children sing.

The Giving Book – Part 2

In my last blog I said that my poem, “The Giving Book,” was just published in a periodical.

But even before I wrote “The Giving Book”  I was thinking that I’d never used a “Giving Book” myself to send any money to a charity.  So I decided to put my money where my words were.

I just saw that the Red Cross now has one, and I was aware of another one, but can’t remember from whom.

The gift catalog  I used was from Franklin Graham’s organization – PO Box 3000; Boone, NC  28607-3000.

I gave some to help a child be able to study the Bible and then receive a New Testament at the completion.  There are so many things that touch a person’s heart in these catalogs, and that was one of the ones for me.

I encourage you to do the same, making a donation, according to your ability to give (Holy Bible – Acts 11:29).

Now here’s the full version of “The Giving Book” poem as in my new chapbook,
A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes.  The foreword is by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor of International Christian Center San Jose, California.

The Giving Book

A Currier and Ives Christmas
Is what I’m planning for –
The hearth and decorations,
The wreath upon the door.

The catalogs have already come.
Too many to actually count.
Those chocolate covered cherries,
And Christmas trees that sprout.

And the big ole’ cake,
With candied fruit and nuts,
Comes in that complimentary
Tin from the Season Hut.

But one came the other day.
It was the very best.
The Giving Book,
Had gifts – nothing like all the rest.

These presents are for peoples
All around the world,
To make their lives much better
No matter which flag there unfurled.

You can give these
In the name of someone dear,
To include them
In this Christmas cheer.

You could give a lamb or goat,
Or well to quench the thirst.
There was even a wooden prefab
Old fashioned country church.

There are books for children,
To tell of God’s great love,
And of Jesus His dear Son,
Who came down from above.

Even children who have heart trouble,
To the U.S. they can fly,
To see the doctor – now all fixed up.
So they can live – not die.

Send some fruit or baby chicks.
Teach youth to read and write.
Give some fish to a village,
Which is a great delight.

You don’t have to give for it all,
Part is just OK,
To make someone’s Christmas bright
Is the Christians’ Christmas Way.

Gifts through the Giving Book,
To family and my friends,
Just see the smile upon their face.
One that seems to never end.

A Giving Book Christmas
Is what I’m praying for –
The heart of selfless kindness,
The Christ shines from my door.

There are some giving Christmas catalogs where you may help needy persons.  For
example, you could donate money to the charity for a goat in the name of a relative or friend, and then let them know.

    A New Year Resolution

As this New Year dawns before us
We will humbly pray
That we may trust in our Lord Jesus
Each and every day.

We don’t know what ill awaits us.
We don’t know what good.
But we will trust Him now and always
So we’ll do what we should.

             The Missionaries

The children marched from the schoolhouse
To the church across the street,
To see The Missionaries
Who were very kind, gentle, and sweet.
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
The man led them in the songs
While the woman played with grace,
The children sang and sang and sang
With smiles on every face.
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Everyone got very quiet
Because the prayer time came.
The power of the Lord just filled that place.
They prayed in Jesus’ Name.

He’s Already Taken Care of It

The problem may be difficult
As it looms along our way,
Or maybe not so hard
As we live each and every day.
– – – – – – – – – — – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
As His Son died on Calvary –
The Cross for you and me,
He’s already taken care of it
From sin to set us free.
