Anniversary 10 – Amen

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

There Is A Bridge (Hay un puente)

There Is A Bridge

Suspended over unfathomed depths,
There is a bridge, not very wide,
But people decide to traverse it daily,
Eyes drawn to the other side.

Some won’t travel this lean span,
But choose a different wider way,
“Plenty of room and safety
To get me across,” they say.

While others know that
This is the only way to go,
Across this stained wood,
Safely from the abyss below.

Of wood and nails,
This bridge was cheaply made,
But with toil and love
A big price once was paid.

You see this Bridge spans
The gap between mankind and God,
And has supported people
Who, one way, from past to now, have trod.

Salvation comes by the Bridge,
Laid down by Christ before,
As He gave His life on the Cross,
So many could cross o’er.

Hay un puente

Suspendido sobre un vacío vasto
Hay un puente, no muy ancho.
Pero la gente decide a diario cruzarlo
Con la mirada puesta en el otro lado.

Algunos no cruzarán este trecho delgado,
Sino que elegirán un camino más amplio.
“Bastante seguro y mucho más espacio
Para cruzar sin riesgos”, dirán confiados.

Mientras tanto, otros estarán enterados
De que este es el camino para ir asegurados;
Afianzados sobre este material desgastado
Para no caer hacia el abismo de abajo.

De maderas y clavos
Este puente fue fabricado,
Pero con amor y trabajo
Un gran precio fue pagado.

Ves que este puente, celestial, bienaventurado,

Christmas Morning

Christmas morning –
Bells ring.
Christmas morning –
Children sing.

Before gifts
Story read.
Before food
Prayer instead.

Paper flying
Off in a flash.
Thank-yous
In a dash.

Reminding us
Of God’s gift long ago –
Baby presented
His love to show.

Being together,
A big part.
Sharing,
What’s on our heart.

Christmas Morning –
Bells ring.
Christmas morning –
Children sing.

Navidad por la mañana

Navidad por la mañana:
suenan las campanas.
Navidad por la mañana:
cantan gregorianas.

Antes de los regalos,
se leen relatos.
Antes de la comida,
oraciones como grato.

Vuelan papeles
que en el aire parpadean.
Son muchas “gracias”
que en el viento se pasean.

Recordándonos
del regalo de Dios tiempo antes.
Un bebé que mostraría
todo su amor irradiante.

Estando juntos,
en gran parte,
compartiendo
nuestro interno baluarte.

The Eve of
Christmas Eve:
A Reading in Three Acts

Since Christmas falls on Sunday
With Christmas Eve Service, too,
Might be tough on the folks –
That really won’t do.

Prologue –

There was something even better
Than Christmas Eve this year,
At the church down the road
With the pastors so dear.

It’s that big building.
That’s pretty old.
But a place where the Gospel
Is always lovingly told.

Since Christmas falls on Sunday
With Christmas Eve Service, too,
Might be tough on the folks –
That really won’t do.

Act 1 –

The morning of the Eve of Christmas Eve
Would set the stage just right,
For the awe inspiring program
Which would happen just tonight.

The children were all ready.
They’d memorized their parts.
They knew them so well.
They knew them all by heart.

 

 

 

The technician adjusting slides
So sound would be OK,
And also make the lighting
Point exactly the right way.

Mrs. Jones was calling
Some persons she’d invited
To remind them to come
At 7:00 p.m., she’s excited.

This Pastor was praying
Upon his knees this morn’,
That tonight’s program
Would Jesus Christ adorn.

Now just before tonight,
Time for all to rest,
To make this Christmas Eve Eve
The very, very Best.

Act II –

The Eve of Christmas Eve
Was a very special night.
Each person attending
Showed exceptional delight.

First, it was carol time
To sing those old greats,
About the Birth of Jesus.
They could hardly wait.

 

 

 

Then the children filed in.
The place silent became.
A song about Jesus
The quiet night He came.

The Center was packed
With the children on stage.
Even the balcony full.
The congregation engaged.

This Pastor sat on a couch
By a framed stable scene,
Where he would narrate,
This holy night theme.

Mary and Joseph came out.
No room at the Inn.
No room for Jesus,
Where tonight’s story begins.

 

 

 

With deep feeling
This Brother did read
About the shepherds’ sight,
What they did see.

One child wearing a robe,
And staff in their hand,
Looked up – up – up high
Where the angels did stand.

 

 

 

Now time for a song
With piano so soft.
A solo is heard, clearly,
Even way up in the loft.

The children kneel and point
To the direction of West,
As this Minister told of the wise men
Who gifted their best.

And then the three boys,
Off, by stage left went.
Another way, than entering
From where they were sent.

 

 

 

Recitation – a poem.
When would she start?
But soon that powerful last line
“I can give Him my heart.”

This Preacher opened his Bible
And spoke with great zeal.
Birth – Life – Death – Resurrection.
Rebirth in Jesus, he appealed.

And then what happened
Was to everyone’s awe.
The front full – wise seekers,
Everyone saw.

To the world joy –
Melody to the ceiling ascends,
As one voice,
Everyone sang at the end.

Christmas Eve Eve –
What a very special night.
Children and audience –
All hearts Bright.

 

 

 

Act III –

The Eve of Christmas Eve almost done,
The Lead Pastor came forward
To address the crowd
Before it was over.

This humble man of God,
Said that he cared
About this church
And why it was there.

He encouraged each
To follow their dream,
To use their talents for the Lord
As the children they’d seen.

Epilogue –

Following Christmas Eve Eve
All did linger longer,
Having sweet fellowship
With so much to Ponder.

Today’s reading (poem) is much longer than usual and is based on a real situation of Christmas being on Sunday and the church wanting to have a Christmas Eve Service, so they decided to have it on the Friday evening before Christmas. Thus, the Eve of Christmas Eve!

La víspera de Nochebuena:
Una lectura en tres actos

La Navidad caerá en domingo
y con ella la Nochebuena, también;
eso podría ser duro para la gente,
y realmente no sería un parabién.

Prólogo

Había algo aún mucho mejor
que la Nochebuena de este año,
en la iglesia al final de la calle
con los queridos pastores de antaño.

Es ese gran y distintivo edificio:
un lugar viejo, de larga duración,
pero en donde el Evangelio
siempre se predica con amor.

La Navidad caerá en domingo
y con ella la Nochebuena, también;
eso podría ser duro para la gente,
y realmente no sería un parabién.

Acto 1

Esa mañana de la Nochebuena
el escenario a la perfección se prepararía
para el asombroso e inspirador programa
el cual solo esta noche ocurriría.

Los niños estaban todos listos,
habían memorizado sus partes.
Se las conocían todas tan bien
que en sus corazones eran estandartes.

 

 

 

El técnico ajusta el audio y los detalles
para que todo funcione de manera perfecta.
Así, también hace que la iluminación
apunte justo en la dirección correcta.

La señora Jones estaba llamando
a algunas de las personas invitadas,
para recordarles que vinieran a la hora:
a las 7:00 p.m.; andaba muy emocionada.

Este Pastor estaba orando
arrodillado esta mañana,
para que el programa de la noche
a Jesucristo bellamente adornara.

Justo antes de esta esperada noche,
es hora de que todos tomen un descanso,
para hacer de esta una buena Nochebuena,
lo mejor de lo mejor: un hermoso remanso.

Acto II

La víspera de la Nochebuena
fue una noche muy especial.
Cada persona que asistió
mostró un deleite excepcional.

Primero, era la hora de los villancicos
para cantar esos grandes añorados,
para cantar sobre el nacimiento de Jesús.
Uno de los eventos más esperados.

 

 

 

Los niños entonces entraron.
El lugar silencioso se volvió.
Una canción sobre Jesús;
la tranquila noche en la que llegó.

El Centro estaba bien armado,
siendo los niños toda la atención.
Incluso el balcón estaba colmado
por la conmovida congregación.

Este Pastor se sentó en un sofá
con una escena ya montada,
en donde él entonces narraría
este tema de la noche santa.

Con apenas espacio en el albergue,
María y José salieron a medianoche;
con apenas espacio para Jesús,
así comenzó la historia de esta noche.

 

 

 

Con un sentimiento profundo
este hermano al auditorio leyó;
relató la vigilia de los pastores,
y lo que su presencia avistó.

Un niño con una túnica portando,
y un bastón en la mano llevando,
miró arriba, arriba, bien a lo alto,
a donde estaban los ángeles alados.

 

 

 

Ahora es el momento de una canción,
con el piano, tocado con suave afán.
Se oye un solo, muy claramente,
incluso hasta allá arriba en el desván.

Los niños se arrodillan y señalan,
en dirección al Oeste apuntando,
como este ministro dijo de los sabios
que de lo mejor de sí han ido dando.

Y luego los tres muchachos
por la izquierda fueron despachados,
tomando la vía del escenario
desde donde habìan sido enviados.

 

 

 

Recitación de un poema,
y la poetiza causa expectación.
Pero pronto, esa poderosa última línea:
“Puedo darle mi corazón.”

Este predicador su Biblia abrió
y con gran celo ante todos habló.
Nacimiento, vida, muerte, resurrección.
Renacimiento en Jesús, apeló.

Y luego lo que pasó a continuación
fue para todos causa de estupor:
el frente lleno de buscadores sabios,
Todos lo vieron como objeto de esplendor.

Para la alegría del mundo,
la melodía ascendió al techo,
y al unísono, como una sola voz
todos cantaron al final del evento.

Esa víspera de nochebuena,
qué noche tan, tan especial.
Los corazones de todos los presentes
iluminados, llenos de brillo torrencial.

 

 

 

Acto III

La víspera de Nochebuena casi acaba,
así que se adelanta el Pastor presidente
para dirigirse a toda la multitud presente
antes de que el programa culminara.

Este humilde hombre de Dios
expresó ante los presentes su interés.
Habló sobre esta destacada iglesia
y de porqué estaba allí como feligrés.

Alentó a cada uno de los presentes
a seguir apasionadamente sus sueños,
a usar sus talentos para adorar al Señor
así como habían visto de los pequeños.

Epílogo

Después de la víspera de Nochebuena
todos se quedaron compartiendo por más rato,
disfrutando de su dulce compañerismo
y con tanto que reflexionar entre sus tratos.

Children Know the Gift: A Christmas Day Reading

Angels to the earth descending,
Full of Christmas joy.
Powerful is their message blending,
“It’s a baby boy.”

Soaring in the sky,
Shepherds see the band.
Saying, “Glory to God in the Highest,”
With Peace to all the land.

They go with haste,
To where the baby lays.
Then worship God and praise Him,
Telling all, along the way.

Then two years pass,
Since the Wise Men saw the Star,
And follow it to Bethlehem.
They follow it afar.

And when they come into the house,
See the Child King!
Gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh,
To Him they humbly bring.

As we think on Christmas Day,
Of this story, very old,
We know the gift that God gives us
Is Jesus, long foretold.

Los niños saben del Regalo: una lectura navideña

Los ángeles descienden a la tierra,
con el gozo del nacimiento contemplando.
Poderoso era su mensaje del profetizado,
mientras lo anunciabana cantando.

Volando con gracia arriba en los cielos,
los pastores ven a los divinos alados
mientras dicen “gloria a Dios en las alturas,
y paz en la tierra para los que Él ha aprobado”.

Y los pastores se fueron con prisa
a donde el bebé yacía acostado.
Entonces adoraron a Dios y lo alabaron
proclamando las noticias en todos lados.

Luego transcurrieron dos años
desde que los astrólogos avistaran la señal,
y siguieran dicho astro hasta Belén,

Christmas Is A Family Time

Christmas is a family time
As it was so long ago,
With Joseph, Mary, and the Baby,
In the stable, as we all know.

They weren’t missing anything
With the Gift right in their sight,
With the angels up in the sky
That very holy night.

The warmth and love that family shared
As shepherds came right away,
To see what had been told them
That first Christmas day.

The family looked in wonder up at the star
Not placed on any tree,
But placed by God up in the air
For them, for you, for me.

And some years later, like ornaments,
The wise men came to give,
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh
To help the family live.

Joseph, Mary, and the Baby,
All had their special part,
As Mary thought, and thought,
And treasured all these things in her heart.

So Christmas is a family time
As it was, long ago, that year,
And now we gather once again
For gift giving, love, and good cheer.

Navidad es época familiar

Navidad es una época familiar,
como bien lo fue en tiempo pasado,
con José, María y el bebé en el establo,
como ya todos estamos enterados.

No les hacía falta nada,
teniendo el Regalo justo frente a ellos,
con los ángeles arriba en el cielo
contemplando aquel divino momento.

Calor y amor fue lo que esa familia compartió
mientras los pastores estaban a campo raso;
pastores que confirmaron lo que habían escuchado,
de un cumplimiento profético digno de un parnaso.

La familia miró arriba a las estrellas;
no, no fue a ningún árbol decorativo.
Miraron a los astros puestos por Dios en el cielo,
colocados allí como testigos contemplativos.

Y algunos años luego, con ornamnentos,
hombres de sabiduría vinieron con homenaje.
Sus obsequios fueron oro, olíbano y mirra,
para que la familia viviera digna y no en hospedaje.

José, María y el bebé, cada uno en particular
tuvo su parte en este evento tan especial.
María hizo bien, pues pensó, reflexionó y meditó,
y estas cosas en su corazón así atesoró.

Así que navidad es una época familiar,
como bien lo fue hace tiempo, por ese año;
por eso ahora nos reunimos, una vez más,
para hacer dádivas y dar amor, como en antaño.

Where it’s Christmas all the time
Because there’s joy for you and me –
It isn’t on the earth
But in Heaven, you will see.

The Gift that God has given
Will be realized by us then.
For Christmas in Heaven
Is not just Christmas now and again.

There’ll be our Present, Jesus,
The blessed God of love,
Wrapped by the Holy Spirit
Tying ribbons as a dove.

Where it’s Christmas all the time
There won’t be any snow,
But there are wondrous streets of gold.
That’s where I want to go.

Where it’s Christmas all the time
Because there’s joy for you and me –
It isn’t on the earth
But in Heaven, you will see.

En donde es navidad todo el tiempo

En donde es navidad todo el tiempo
porque hay gozo para ti y para mí,
no es en la tierra, sino en el cielo;
como ya verás que es así.

El regalo que Dios ha dado
se hará realidad para nosotros,
ya que navidad en el cielo
no es navidad solo días pocos.

Allí está nuestro Regalo, Jesús,
un bendito dios de amor,
cubierto por el espíritu santo,
cumpliendo su rol de pastor.

En donde es navidad todo el tiempo
nunca se hace invierno, y no hay nieve.
Más bien, hay maravillosas calles doradas,
y es ahí en donde mi vista se conmueve.

Plan It

I Kings 19:12

We plan it and we do it.
We think it works that way,
But sometimes
Our best planned plans just go astray.

Occasionally we see things coming,
But many times not.
There are so many life surprises.
They may leave us distraught.

But one thing’s always certain –
The Lord’s with us now and all the time.
He cares and keeps special watch on us
Just to make sure that we are fine.

So as we continue through our lives,
We must trust the Lord’s will
To gently guide us,
As we listen to His small voice still.

One sure thing is that there will be uncertainly in our lives.  This is when we need to continue to trust our Lord Jesus Christ.  He was and is our Rescuer and Leader.  As Leader, He not only goes before us, but also walks beside us.

Lo planeamos, y lo hacemos.
Creemos que de esa manera funciona,
pero a veces, en la ejecución,
nuestros mejores planes se desmoronan.

En ocasiones vemos las cosas venir,
pero muchas veces no podemos prever:
la vida viene con tantas sorpresas

Behind the Curtain / Detrás de la cortina

Behind the Curtain
Hebrews 6:18-20

Jesus went behind the curtain,
(From top to bottom rent),
To the Holy of Holies,
For us His life was spent.

Jesus is our pioneer,
Dying and rising on this earth’s sod.
Now we are running
Toward our Hope in God!

We now can go through Jesus,
(To the open gates of Heaven, too),
To be in the very presence of God,
Our Hope – firm and true.

Detrás de la cortina
Hebreos 6:18-20

Jesús fue detrás de la cortina
(desde lo más alto descendió)
y con su muerte, ante el Santísimo
su vida por nosotros entregó.

Jesús es nuestro gran precursor,
con su muerte nos otorgó redención
y con ella nos ha permitido obtener
