Mother and George Washington

Mother and George Washington

The Father of our Country’s
Birthday is today.
It’s memorable,
But not in only one way.

Because, you see, our dear Mother
Was born on this day, too.
She remains such a blessing
For me and also you.

With ice cream (a la mode)
As we eat our cherry pie,
We’ll remember George and Mother
We cannot tell a lie.

So, we see that we are double blessed,
In 1918 Mother, and George 1732.
Both meaning so much to all of us,
Born on February Twenty-Two.

Anniversary 7 – Serving Heaven
By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God.  From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.”  Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through churches and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing!  So complimentary in the common faith!”  Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

LORD WILLING,  I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!”  Steven C., San Jose, CA.

. . . Showers of Blessing – Literally

The Citywide Hymn Sing group, braving heavy rain, in the throes of a drought, enthusiastically sang the opening hymn, “. . . Showers of Blessing” led by that evening’s MC – Larry Pine. This, last Friday evening, February 6th at Bethel Church, 1201 South Winchester Boulevard, San Jose, CA 95128.

As part of the program, I had the privilege of reading some of my poems and presenting a vocal rendition.  (See my part below.)

Larry’s wife, Sharon, who accompanied me, is a terrific evangelistic style piano player with her own remarkable technique.

During the hymns, besides piano, the accompanists were excellent clarinet, flute, and bass saxophone players.

If you live in the San Jose area, or even visiting, come on over to the Hymn Sing! See the details below.

“You pick the hymns. This is an inspiring time of singing by the audience. No preaching, no pretext, no fees, just hymns. Put your hymn request on a paper, and we sing as many as we can from 7:00-8:30 p.m. Hymnbooks are provided. Meets the first Friday of each month except July.” (Larry Pine)

They usually meet ”in Lee Hall, at the back of Bethel’s main building on the ground floor. Park in the back and look for the signs.” (Larry Pine)

Here is my part of the program which was passed out to the attendees.  Please take time to read the scripture verses. (The poems are on this website.)

The Unfinished Picture

The Unfinished Picture

The unfinished picture
Hangs framed on the wall,
Of the grade school,
Right down the hall.

The children see it daily,
Passing to and from class,
Though it stands against
What the teachers all ask.

To finish your work,
Is a “golden rule”,
Which the teachers always say,
A rule of the school.

Only partly done,
Not to be hypercritical,
But up there, not finished
Is pretty hypocritical.

“The Athenaeum Portrait” incomplete
by painter Gilbert Stuart is no mystery.
The principal merely undertook
To inform children about history.

The depiction of the school’s namesake,
The Father of Our Country,
George Washington
Is who it is, you see.

Kids love President Washington,
Who did so much,
To help begin our country,
In God he did trust.

But how can this portrait
Be in the hall?
Concluded –
It wasn’t all.

To not finish
Is a poor sample.
To not finish
Is not a good example.

[This poem not completed
because deadline to publish
before Presidents’ Day.]

Washington did trust in God and is a good example for each of us.  The painter made
money from copying the painting, but never finished the original.
