Can We Make It Through Christmas?

Can We Make It Through Christmas?

I Thessalonians 5:18

Christmas is here again.
Can we make it through?
A lot of things to think of.
A lot of things to do.

As we are some older
And the children moved away.
Should we travel there
Or could they come to stay?

Presents to buy.
Presents to wrap.
The tree to put up.
Need to take a nap.

Cookies in the pantry.
Turkey in the frig.
Pies in the freezer.
Ready for this gig.

Our kids arrive
And grandchildren, too.
Then the drudgery
Turns into debut.

The oldest one, Sara,
Is asked to read the Story
About when Jesus came
And left His  glory.

Hands held.
It’s time for the blessing.
Thanking God.
We are not distressing!

Christmas is here again.
Can we make it through?
A lot of things to think of.
A lot of things to do.

When Our Preacher Came to Dinner

When Our Preacher Came to Dinner

It’s something I’ll always remember,
When our preacher came to dinner.
Not what you’d think –
Nothing about Heaven or sinners.

He stepped in the door smiling.
Our family loved that man of God.
He enjoyed telling jokes and stories
Almost everywhere he trod.

Mother had the best spread
With roast and all the trimmings,
And apple pie for dessert.
My anticipation brimming.

But she called me to another room
And declared the meat I must pass.
“Not plenty for us all,” she revealed.
“Not enough to last.”

I knew my favorite pie
Would be at the end of the way.
Mouth watering.
The highlight of my day.

“You didn’t eat all your dinner.”
Mother broke the silence of the group.
“So no dessert for you!”
Then I knew I’d been duped.

But this didn’t really happen.
It was from someone who’s a good spinner.
Guess who told this story at the table,
When our preacher came to dinner?

Pullin’ and Prayin’

Pullin’ and Prayin’

Psalm 107:17-22

I’m pullin’ and prayin’
For you to come through.
Your health failed again,
But your job you must go to.

You’re gaunt and frail.
You were once muscular strong.
Now your face is drawn.
Your vigor all gone.

But God will answer.
I’m sure of this now.
His healing energy.
His healing power.

You’re looking better
As time goes on.
Strength returning –
A phenomenon

Laughter returns
Like the good old days.
Still pullin’ and prayin’
That this all will stay.

Christmas Is A Family Time / Navidad es época familiar

nativity

Christmas Is A Family Time

Christmas is a family time
As it was so long ago,
With Joseph, Mary, and the Baby,
In the stable, as we all know.

They weren’t missing anything
With the Gift right in their sight,
With the angels up in the sky
That very holy night.

The warmth and love that family shared
As shepherds came right away,
To see what had been told them
That first Christmas day.

The family looked in wonder up at the star
Not placed on any tree,
But placed by God up in the air
For them, for you, for me.

And some years later, like ornaments,
The wise men came to give,
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh
To help the family live.

Joseph, Mary, and the Baby,
All had their special part,
As Mary thought, and thought,
And treasured all these things in her heart.

So Christmas is a family time
As it was, long ago, that year,
And now we gather once again
For gift giving, love, and good cheer.

contemplando aquel divino momento.

mientras los pastores estaban a campo raso;

La familia miró arriba a las estrellas;

como bien lo fue hace tiempo, por ese año;

Mother’s Photo Album

Mother’s Photo Album

Mother pulls her photo album
From the bookshelf by the wall.
She views those dear ones,
Her whole family, all.

She sees her son, then three,
Riding his little car,
Now a lawyer,
Having just passed the bar.

Her daughter is shown,
From college graduated.
She’s working as a nurse,
One who’s highly rated.

There’s Dad in his suit
And Mother right there.
Arm in arm just before church,
What a cool pair!

Mother rubs these photos,
As if alive, seeing the children grow.
She’s glad she spent time with them
Though always on the go.

Time has gone so fast,
Memories flow like a river,
But God has taken care.
Her eyes, tears deliver.

Then, the doorbell rings,
As son and daughter stand,
“Happy Mother’s Day,” they say.
Another visit, oh so grand!

It’s fun to go back and look at old photos.  Sometimes we have so many that it is hard to organize them.  Seeing our family as they used to be is good in seeing how God has helped us.  But it’s best to look forward in faith to how God will guard us and bless us in the future.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother and George Washington

Mother and George Washington

The Father of our Country’s
Birthday is today.
It’s memorable,
But not in only one way.

Because, you see, our dear Mother
Was born on this day, too.
She remains such a blessing
For me and also you.

With ice cream (a la mode)
As we eat our cherry pie,
We’ll remember George and Mother
We cannot tell a lie.

So, we see that we are double blessed,
In 1918 Mother, and George 1732.
Both meaning so much to all of us,
Born on February Twenty-Two.

I Remember Mother

2 Timothy 2:15

I remember Mother
Sitting by our log cabin fire,
Telling Bible stories,
Our hearts glowing, inspired.

My dear sisters and I,
Hanging on every word.
Really listening to her
Not just sounds heard.

Naomi, with Ruth’s affection,
Of Elijah and Daniel, so brave,
Then of the risen Jesus
Who for us His life paid.

Teaching growth lessons
Very practical for each day,
And from our mother’s actions
Learning the wholesome way.

Ending our time, singing
About the mercies of the Lord.
Worshiping in those woods.
Our voices in one accord.

Falling asleep
Thinking of His love,
But also of Mother
And her firm faith in God above.

I remember Mother
Sitting by our log cabin fire,
Telling Bible stories,
Our hearts glowing, inspired.

Grandma’s Club House

Club House - jpeg

Grandma’s Club House

Grandma made a Club House
For her grandchildren to delight.
She wanted to be in touch with them
To be remembered when out of sight.

Her loving heart planned it –
Some PVC pipes and curtains.
She built it with her handy hands.
It was appealing to be certain.

So she can tell the stories
From the Bible, so well,
Like David and Goliath
And Jonah and the Whale.

And then a song or two:
Jesus Loves Me.
Jesus Loves all The Little Children
From sin He will set them free.

To get the young kids thinking
About God and all He does,
To bring them close to Jesus
And our Father up above.

They excitedly visit Grandma
To hear the stories, more,
And Grandma’s love of Jesus
Right inside that Club House door.

Grandmas are special people to their grandchildren.  There is a relationship between them which no other person can fill.  When a grandmother has a concern for her grandchildren in teaching them about the Lord, this is a beautiful thing – one which is sacred in God’s sight.
