Anniversary 10 – Amen

By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.” Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through individuals, churches, and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing! So complimentary in the common faith!” Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

“I’m sorry that it took me so long to thank you for your wonderful gift of poetry.
As I was reading your poem, [Independence Day] the images of the people celebrating Independence Day and being proud of this day came to me as if I was watching a nice short movie. I was very moved.” Daisuke (Luke) S., Mountain View, CA.

MY APPRECIATION also to Samuel Rondón Acevedo who has done an excellent job translating  some of my poems into Spanish.

“I just read ‘Mistaken Identity.’  It is very moving, and one of your best.”  Joan M.-H., Muskogee, OK.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

“I really enjoy your poetry.  I will start sharing in my Sunday school classes.”  Travis B., Asbury, WV.

LORD WILLING, I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!” Steven C., Oregon.

God bless!

Living in the Blessing: A Christmas Thanksgiving

Living in the Blessing:
A Christmas Thanksgiving

The kid wanted that bike all year.
Smiling, walking quickly toward the tree,
The climax of begging his parents daily,
The shiny bike was there.  See!

As he jumped on it,
“It doesn’t have a horn –
A beeping one, with a red button!”
He looked so forlorn.

So from that time
To the next Yuletide
He kept pleading for the horn.
Greater, greater, greater magnified.

Then when Christmas arrived,
The next year,
The blaring horn on his bike
Appeared.

He had the blessing,
But it turned out bittersweet
Because he wasn’t satisfied
With only that bike to keep.

Shouldn’t we live in the blessing
This Christmas and all way?
Shouldn’t we thank God for it
Each and every day?

Mother’s Photo Album

Mother’s Photo Album

Mother pulls her photo album
From the bookshelf by the wall.
She views those dear ones,
Her whole family, all.

She sees her son, then three,
Riding his little car,
Now a lawyer,
Having just passed the bar.

Her daughter is shown,
From college graduated.
She’s working as a nurse,
One who’s highly rated.

There’s Dad in his suit
And Mother right there.
Arm in arm just before church,
What a cool pair!

Mother rubs these photos,
As if alive, seeing the children grow.
She’s glad she spent time with them
Though always on the go.

Time has gone so fast,
Memories flow like a river,
But God has taken care.
Her eyes, tears deliver.

Then, the doorbell rings,
As son and daughter stand,
“Happy Mother’s Day,” they say.
Another visit, oh so grand!

It’s fun to go back and look at old photos.  Sometimes we have so many that it is hard to organize them.  Seeing our family as they used to be is good in seeing how God has helped us.  But it’s best to look forward in faith to how God will guard us and bless us in the future.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Is Your Day Preprayed?

pray13 - Pray - Plan - Prepare - Pray

Is Your Day Preprayed?

Have you talked to the Lord?
Early in the morning or late the night before.
Have you an agreement made?
Is your day preprayed?

Thanking Him for what He’s going to do
In your life and for others –
Blessings through and through.

Asking for loved ones home and far away,
That they’ll have clear paths,
Daily joy during their earthly stay.

Planning with Him each part of the day,
His Holy Spirit to lead,
Step-by-step in His way.

Being guided to opportunities for Him,
So He may grace bestow
To persons whose eyes have been opened to sin.

Serving others when the time is right.
Demonstrating to others
What is Christ-like.

You have talked to the Lord
Early in the morning or late the night before.
With Him an agreement you’ve made.
Your day is now preprayed.

Poems, He Writes

He seals his poetry notebook.
His oculars blurry,
But still unpremeditatedly manuscripts the last word
In an instantaneous hurry.

The diurnal course is failing.
Only the midnight oil now to burn.
The hearthside is tempestuous.
The log cabin noiseless until day’s return.

But soon he is quiescently somnolent.
His head collapsing to the fore and back,
Like a bobblehead,
Because repose he lacks.

He dreams of his teacher
Of English, so good,
As he sits in the classroom
Hanging on her every word.

She writes on the board,
For all to see,
In 8 inch tall letters,
The word, “CLARITY.”

She proceeds to tell them
Why so important it is
To say what you mean
In simple communication.

As he awakes,
Embers glow behind the fireplace grate,
He opens his notebook
And then sits up straight.

He looks through his verses
To see if he can see
Any writing to simplify,
Any easier words that might be.

And as he thinks
How his poem might end,
The morning sky has turned bright
And the sunshine comes in.

Computer spell checking is great, but good old proofreading is better. Go through the content and check if you’ve selected the correct words.  Then, take the text and read it backwards so you can concentrate on the spelling of individual words without thinking too much about the content.

My journalism teacher, Miss Spell, always used to say, “Even thought great care is taken, their might still be sum misnakes because no one is prefect.”   🙂

Thank you to those who follow my website.  Also, if you are dropping by today – welcome.  May God richly bless all of you!

Uncooked Poetry

school.reading.03 - 3Molly

Uncooked Poetry

Molly sits on the bed
Not feeling very good.
She’s trying to read
Like every night she should.

Then Mother thinks of what could be the matter,
And then she knows what might.
“What have you been reading
Before bed tonight?”

“Just some poetry.
For me that’s very right!”

“No wonder you’re feeling ill,”
(As Mother examines the book carefully)
“This poetry’s uncooked.
Can’t you see?”

“There are no rhyming words
At the end of every other line,
And just because they’re fancy words
This doesn’t make healthy verse and fine.”

“You’re not feeling well yet,
But I have the answer, dear.
You need to read some edited rhyming verse
Which will make everything real clear.”

Then Molly felt all right that night,
As she took the plunge
Into fully cooked poetry,
She read all the poems one by one.

Desperate to Rhyme

writing-004 - man at computer

Desperate to Rhyme

When you write poetry,
Sometimes you’re just stuck,
Desperate what to rhyme,
With what.

You go through the ABCs
And then you get confused.
Now you look at all those rhyming lists.
You can’t really get enthused!

Why do they suggest words
That really make no sense?
Now why would you want to rhyme
“Sense” with “business lunch expense”?

Many poems don’t rhyme anyway.
Writers don’t even try,
Only those feely-touchy words and phrases,
“tranquil. alarm. tranquil and alarm. why?”

So when desperate to rhyme
Using those words you can’t find,
What do you do?
Don’t think too much and use a little slight of mind.

April is National Poetry Month.  April 30th is Poem in Your Pocket Day.  This is a day when people carry a poem with them and read it aloud to others.

I appreciate what Larry Pine wrote in his South Bay Concert News (March) referring to my Poetry Reading on February 6th, 2015, the following:

“The Christian poetry of Charles Mayes added a creative break to the Bethel Hymn Sing. Even poems with motions for Children’s programs . . . ”

The Final Poem

The Final Poem
(Matthew 25:21- ERV)

The poet’s mind stood still like a block,
Resembling embers of a fire – soon gone.
Ideas hard to come by,
Now God’s refreshment to wait on.

At once, the author’s name was called,
A strong voice was heard –
“You are a good servant who can be trusted. . . ”
“Share my happiness,” was His Word.

An angel escorted the writer through a gate,
Where the poet walked on streets of gold.
There, no light, but God’s,
As the Bible foretold.

There was no crying,
Nor sickness, nor pain,
Just Love flowing freely
Through the power of Jesus name.

Then as swiftly as the dream had begun,
The poet awakened at the new dawn of light.
The poet’s mind spinning with astonishing,
New glorious ideas to write.
