Greeting 2023

Greeting 2023
Ephesians 6:12

This year was kinda bad.
We had a lot of problems.
We look ahead to this New Year
To see God continuing to solve them.

There was the plumbing deluge,
Then Mom became ill last Winter.
They laid Dad off at the factory,
And then the broken printer.

The truck needed a new battery.
It was done before its years.
The radiator leaked like a sieve,
And our rent was in arrears.

The electric bill soared so high,
And now it’s the water heater.
U.S. politics didn’t go our way,
And food too scarce for eaters.

We know it’s really not these things,
But how to them we react.
Our struggle is not against flesh and blood.
It’s those spiritual forces who us attack.

It doesn’t depend on how we feel
Or even what we do.
It’s whole-souled trust in God above
That always gets us through.

— Charles B. Mayes

Was 2022 a good year for you?  Is every year a good year when we follow Jesus Christ?  Is there such a thing as a bad day or are all days good in Jesus Christ?

When we follow Jesus, how can we have a bad year or day?  We may have a day with many challenges.  We may have a hard day, but with Him we can see the blessings of each day.  This is not an easy thing.  It is a very hard thing sometimes, but it is a necessary thing as we thank Him and see what He does for us yearly and daily.

And when I don’t trust enough,
Whatever “enough” is,
I ask Him to supply that trust
And He always gives.

[From “Running to the Cross” – 2014 – Charles B. Mayes]

I want to thank those who followed my website in 2022, and some for several years! Also I’m happy for each of you who stop by time to time. May God richly bless all of you in 2023!

Anniversary 10 – Amen

By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.” Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through individuals, churches, and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing! So complimentary in the common faith!” Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

“I’m sorry that it took me so long to thank you for your wonderful gift of poetry.
As I was reading your poem, [Independence Day] the images of the people celebrating Independence Day and being proud of this day came to me as if I was watching a nice short movie. I was very moved.” Daisuke (Luke) S., Mountain View, CA.

MY APPRECIATION also to Samuel Rondón Acevedo who has done an excellent job translating  some of my poems into Spanish.

“I just read ‘Mistaken Identity.’  It is very moving, and one of your best.”  Joan M.-H., Muskogee, OK.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

“I really enjoy your poetry.  I will start sharing in my Sunday school classes.”  Travis B., Asbury, WV.

LORD WILLING, I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!” Steven C., Oregon.

God bless!

Catchya Later, God

Catchya Later, God

Hebrews 2:1

I’ll catchya later, God.
I got so much to do.
Helping with my family.
Things going on, new.

Gotta do the budget.
Gotta wash the clothes.
Put them in the dryer.
Trim the outside rose.

Take care of the mail.
File those important papers.
Drive the kids to school.
Make time for holiday capers.

Plan a birthday party.
Head for the bank.
Help my neighbor mow.
Feed fish in the tank.

I’ll catchya later, God.
Just carelessly
Slip sliding away
From daily victory.

Our USA Congress Prayer and Our American Prayer

icon033 - Praying Hands 5

Our USA Congress Prayer

We should pray for all in Congress
To know Jesus Christ as their friend.
To know Him personally from within.
To follow God’s Word, start to end.

Jesus Christ is their only Hope
For Salvation of their soul.
To live with God in Heaven
Should be their priority goal.

We need to pray for all of Congress
Who do not follow Him.
He is the only light they have.
Now their trust and Salvation needs to begin.

Our American Prayer

If we all follow Jesus in the USA,
Then our freedom will come back,
Just as it has been taken away.
Pray! . . . Pray! . . Pray!

Curtain Up!

Curtain Up!

Curtain Up on the stage of life!
This New Year’s drama starts
With you on the stage,
As the foot and spotlights
Both shine bright.

Not a lark.
You’re excited, yet fearful
In this program to embark.

All thespians ready to move
Through each scene
With dilemmas quite a few.
Plots thickens as characters careen.

You trust your Heavenly Director,
The Lord Jesus Christ.
Dealing with the lying antagonist.
Dealing with the sacrifice.

Whether showstopper or upstaged.
Whether dialogue or soliloquy.
No bit parts here.
The finale is Heaven’s eternity.

Curtain Up on the stage of life!
A New Year – looking ahead.
With Christ, nothing to dread.

I usually write something here about my poems.  The inspiration for this one comes from two persons.

The first is my high school communication teacher, Joan [/Jo-Ann/] Murray-Hogan.  She taught English, speech, radio and TV broadcasting, and drama; and was active in productions for many years.  We enjoy talking on the phone from time to time.

The second is Steve Dini, a spokesman and on-camera talent, who has been teaching high school film studies, radio broadcasting, and drama for many years.  I met Steve during an internship I did at KICU-TV.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Am I Still in the Game?

Am I Still in the Game?

Proverbs 3:5-6; Psalm 16:11

Am I still in the game?
It raced across my mind,
With my Coach
Am I still aligned?

When temptations come daily,
And sometimes I give in.
I didn’t plan to,
But I did it again.

But then I remember
Whose team I’m on.
The other side already defeated,
And mine victoriously won.

Through my Coach, Jesus,
This win I’ll keep.
I still am in the game.
The end line over I leap.

Banning the Bible
Assembly Bill 2943

Are you worrying about
(Many may warn you!)
Possible Bible banning
Out in California?

If someone wants to change
Their lifestyle, extremely,
Bible counselors couldn’t help
Through this scheme.

But we who have the Bible now,
What are we doing with it?
Are we reading it daily?
Do we to a schedule commit?

Are we studying and applying it?
Do we with others discuss?
Reading the Bible,
And letting it read us?

Are you worrying
(Many may warn you!)
About possible Bible banning
Out in California?

If our religious freedoms are taken away – when people can’t get Biblical counseling or choose a Biblical help book – everyone loses.  While this is bad, we must read our Bibles now, when we can, and seek the Lord’s direction.

The Preacher’s Goldfish

photo_47620_20151015 (1)

The Preacher’s Goldfish

The Preacher’s goldfish,
Upon the platform pedestal swims,
Ready for the his sermon illustration
About the Kingdom of Him.

The idea is that the fish is us
And the water – God.
We need to soak ourselves in Him
As we live upon this sod.

To show someone leaving God,
He takes his fish by net scooping.
Right out of the bowl,
At first, a little amusing.

He keeps throwing droplets
On the wiggling, wriggling fish – downing?
The congregation was aghast.
Many squirming and frowning.

Some thought that when it hit the water
The minister’s illustration would go awry.
They thought it was out too long.
His goldfish might sink and die!

However, the fish got a second wind.
The group let out a sigh.
It swam all around the tank.
Now looking very spry!

The church, to this day,
Remembers the lesson told
When we stay in God’s Presence,
Like the goldfish in the bowl.

They Pay It All

photo_4329_20071204

Roman Colosseum

They Pay It All

Those brave Christians
In lands far away
Give their lives for Jesus
The ultimate price to pay.

Being mistreated,
Sexually abused,
Forced from homes and land,
Falsely accused.

They are beheaded
Like prophets of old,
And even crucified
Like our Savior and others bold.

And what is their crime?
Being Jesus’ followers.
Refusing to yield
To their terrorist torturers.

Confessing the Christ,
Not ashamed, but proclaim,
Holding up His name.
Allegiance to humans they disclaim.

Let’s champion our brothers and sisters
By praying, and action
To here and abroad.
All One in Christ showing compassion.
