It’s That Time!

It’s That Time!

It’s Black Friday
Hitting the bricks and mortars
Through the burst doors.
Be aware of those gift hoarders!

Getting there early,
Even then you could be late.
Deep savings.
BOGO* might be the bait.

On Cyber Monday
Better deals your catching.
Free shipping, buying memberships,
But personal information their snatching.

Surfing for gifts,
Much faster, too.
You’d even wish to drone them
To Aunt Sue and Uncle Lou.

But Giving Tuesday
Is really the best
Contributing to selfless causes
To make a big difference.

The Salvation Army, the fire victims help.
Boys and Girls Clubs, fun things the kids can do.
Wounded Warrior Project, empowering Vets.
World Vision, gifting the needy something new.

So don’t forget Giving Tuesday,
On your calendar this year,
Bringing hope to others,
And a lot of Christmas cheer.

Musing

time31

Musing

I loll on the couch
While reflecting creatively,
For hours in the den
As my wife serves iced tea.

Some say –
He’s a snoozer snoozing.
But I say –
I’m just musing.

I contemplate this or that
Pondering my poems today,
Always outside the box
In a novel way.

I stir – a paradigm shift,
Maybe a little word misusing.
But I am project moving
Because I’m really musing

Recently a friend visited our house and asked me how I got the ideas for my poems.  He said, in humor, that I must sit on the couch musing and my wife would bring me iced tea – thus, the motivation for the poem above.

I appreciate you joining me for this little trip down a lighthearted path today.

When we meditate on God’s Word, the Bible, it is really rewarding.  That is the best muse of all!

I Borrow Hymnbooks

I Borrow Hymnbooks

I borrow hymnbooks
From every church I go.
I’ve got quite a set
To you I’d like to show.

When I was a child
I took a Youngsters Sing book,
Spiral bound.
But I was not a crook.

Then in my college days
I went to the church yonder.
Just one, I sticky-fingered there
But I would not it squander.

Starting my employment
From church to church I’d roam.
Needing one here and there
To practice at my home.

By that time
A large collection I had.
But I didn’t
Do anything that bad.

Later on in life
I stayed at one church.
But they changed books 3 times
So I needed each to search.

I have a choice now
Of so many songs.
But really
I’ve done nothing wrong.

I’ve borrowed hymnbooks
From every church I’ve gone
I’ve got quite a set
Now to Hymnbooks Anon.

My Bible Is My File Cabinet

My Bible Is My File Cabinet

My Bible is my file cabinet
I’m ashamed to say.
I use it for filing
The things I need each day.

In Genesis and Exodus
I put my schedule – when I come and go,
In Numbers the church budget,
And employment applications in Job.

In Joshua, sports ministry
And the church’s Walk-A-Thon,
To build a larger building
Seven times bigger than this one.

In Chronicles some history
Of our church so long ago.
In Psalms and Proverbs
Poems and quotes so apropos.

In the Prophets pictures
Of Pastors past.
With the biography of the one
We got at last.

The church bulletins set in Hezekiah.
Which really isn’t a book.
I just put this in the poem.
To see if you were taking a look.

A crocheted cross in Matthew,
To Mark the Gospels’ trace.
In Acts, with missionary newsletters,
Some tracts prayerfully placed.

In the Letters, one from my Aunt Mary,
With Peter and Paul,
It’s getting pretty full now.
I hope it will hold them all.

And in Revelation
An old weather forecast – history,
It looked like rain,
But it’s always a mystery.

But even after Revelation,
In “The Helps,” you see,
Church workers names and emails,
Email back – I hope, to help me.

And in the very, very back,
Scratch paper – a slew – for message notes,
To be placed in whichever Books
From which the sermons are, for us folks.

So now you see my system,
For this I’m getting a name.
My Bible is my file cabinet,
For this I am ashamed.

When I Write A Poem – Rabid to Write

As we look forward to 2012, I’d like to share a poem which got left on the “cutting room floor” from A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes, 2011.  The foreword is by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor of International Christian Center San Jose, California.

I’d also like to thank the “Followers” of my blog.

Happy New Year 2012!!!

When I Right A Poem
   (Rabid to Right)

When I right a poem,
It’s really fun you see.
I’d like to show you,
How it goes for me.

First,  there’s the inspiration,
My mind – it can be soooo dead.
To write just at the very time,
When something comes into my head.

Then the writing itself,
Usually doesn’t take to loooong.
Now for the editing –
Spelling first – allright, as I go along.

“How about this verse instead?
I could say this here.
Why don’t I put that in?
I could say this there.”

“Even I don’t know what I mean by this.
But will the reader know?
Why do I try word plays,
When know one really knows?”

“That line’s convoluted,
Is up all twisted.
Those words don’t really rhyme.
Why don’t I use ‘rested?’ ’’

And then I get a call,
I’ll read it to my rep –
The self-publishing one,
She’ll understand it yet.

I offer to read it on the phone,
She says OK (and she’ll ponder).
I read it in my best voice,
Loudly, because she’s far yonder.

She says how wonderful it is –
And then she starts to cry,
It touched her heart so much,
The best, she says, with a sigh.

She’d now like to publish,
For a limited time.
A deal – a sale – but wait –
All my poems for only $999.00.

I was honored to be honored!
So thrilled was I – I gasp!
But this won’t happen,
Because not enough writ, alas.

So I’ll still continue to
To verse right,
Because I love it so,
Even righting way into the night.

This for my own enjoyment,
And if I had my druthers,
To continue to right for my family
And also for many others.

When I right a poem,
It’s really fun you see.
I’ve now shown you,
How it goes for me.

New Book Ministers To Readers

November 30, 2011

NEW BOOK MINISTERS TO READERS

” . . . creative energy evidenced through every line . . .” – Dr. P.T. Mammen

San Jose, California – Do you want to read Christian poetry that actually rhymes, and prayerfully will help you “rally ’round – a little closer to Heaven?”

Charles B. Mayes, M.A., a community volunteer, including being a Director of Media Relations, has released his first book, A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries), in a chapbook format, through his own Christian Poetry Publishing, with a release date of December 1, 2011.

Mayes’ goal is to inspire the reader to move closer to God. Twenty-two poems include Christmas, New Year’s,  and Easter verse, as well as plenty of devotional insight, and encouragement for Christian service. “My Bible Is My File Cabinet” is a humorous piece that reveals a “problem” of all too many.

The main aim is that the reader not only feels, but actually experiences God’s power in their life. It’s geared especially to Christians who need a boost in their walk with the Lord, and also to those seeking to learn more about the Christian life.

In his foreword, Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor of International Christian Center San Jose, reveals that, “These poems evoke a sense of pure love for God, nature, and those around us. The reader is invited to enter into a unique thought process to appreciate everyday occurrences in life in perspective of time and eternity.”

Charles B. Mayes is a freelance writer living in San Jose, CA. He’s written for the Christian Standard, Northridger, CCC Caller, radio, TV, and websites. Mayes grew up in Muskogee, OK, and was graduated from Ozark Christian College Joplin, MO; California State University at Northridge; and Bethany University, Scotts Valley, CA, where he was also employed.

I would like to do some Book Readings in the San Jose, California area. If you are interested in having me come to your group, please fill out the form below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Mayes. 2011, please fill out the form below and I will get back to you about description,  price, payment, and mailing arrangements as soon as possible.
