The Word of Christ
Taught in the Spirit of Christ
(Ozark Christian College – 1942 – 2017)
Colossians 1:28

“The Word of Christ
Taught in the Spirit of Christ”
For everyone to see.
This is the heart of OCC.

It isn’t the campus
Or any accreditation.
It’s how the Bible is presented.
That’s the real acclamation.

Faculty – men and women of God,
In their own lives show,
The life of Christ,
Faces warm and aglow.

Gospel truths,
Professors study and share
To challenge each
And hearts prepare.

All students – missionaries –
Christian soldiers trained for God,
Ambassadors
Going here and abroad.

So through 75 years past,
And it will always be –
“The Word of Christ
Taught in the Spirit of Christ”
At our cherished OCC.

His Place

jesus_00121 - Jesus Welcomes Sinners

His Place

I know it was “His Place,”
Because He was there
Through every caring person
The Gospel they share.

I walked in that basement
Below the church building old,
And saw that huge painted flag
On the wall unfolded.

Some kids greeted me
With handshakes of the time.
They didn’t care if I was rich,
Or didn’t have a dime.

Some had long hair like me,
Some short, but I didn’t care.
They showed my love.
How could it be?

They offered some cookies and some pop,
And we talked, and talked, and talked,
They cared about my problems.
They loved me a lot.

That’s why it’s called “His Place.”
It was Jesus talking to me.
When I left that painted basement that day
I was changed in my life
Headed on a different Way.

As I look back
I thank God for “His Place,”
And who I met there,
Kids that loved Jesus
To help with my despair.

That why it’s called “His Place.”
To Him it belonged.
After I left there,
My heart had a new song.

A Central Thought

CCC

A Central Thought
(Based on Colossians 2:6-7 NIV)

Twenty members in 1939
Who’d received Jesus Christ as Lord,
From a four week revival
A Church of Christ in San Jose was born.

Founded by Jesus and Mr. William Jessup.
We called him “Brother Bill”.
His down-to-earth kindness and gospel preaching –
The sanctuary, God would fill.

Later meeting at San Jose Bible College,
Then constructing Central Christian Church, which grew.
Believers continue to live in Him.
Many home-grown missionaries, too.

They just keep coming in.
Rooted in Him when the times are tough,
As “Amazing Grace” is still preached.
Built up in Him – when the going gets rough.

Strengthened in a “without borders” faith,
Children and adults including church relatives are taught:
From Hope Christian Church to William Jessup University
The Word of God is caught.

We overflow with thankfulness,
Central Christian Church still thrives.
75 years old now in 2014,
Grateful for how the Lord provides.

I have been privileged to attend 75th Anniversaries of two congregations in my life.

The first was my home church, where I grew up  –  First Christian Church, Muskogee, OK (which is now York Street Christian Church).  Right before the good successful merger becoming York Street, it was 99 years old!

The second was today at my current home church, Central Christian Church, San Jose, CA.  It was a wonderful time of reunion including when former Pastors Don Hinkle and Bryce Jessup spoke.

There is something about a home church that is very important to Christians.  It is a place “where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came” * as that old TV show lyrics say.  But this is nothing like that show about attempted happiness.  It’s a place that you can always feel true joy, being close to God and each other.  This is  “real fellowship” as Don Hinkle said.

My Bible Is My File Cabinet

My Bible Is My File Cabinet

My Bible is my file cabinet
I’m ashamed to say.
I use it for filing
The things I need each day.

In Genesis and Exodus
I put my schedule – when I come and go,
In Numbers the church budget,
And employment applications in Job.

In Joshua, sports ministry
And the church’s Walk-A-Thon,
To build a larger building
Seven times bigger than this one.

In Chronicles some history
Of our church so long ago.
In Psalms and Proverbs
Poems and quotes so apropos.

In the Prophets pictures
Of Pastors past.
With the biography of the one
We got at last.

The church bulletins set in Hezekiah.
Which really isn’t a book.
I just put this in the poem.
To see if you were taking a look.

A crocheted cross in Matthew,
To Mark the Gospels’ trace.
In Acts, with missionary newsletters,
Some tracts prayerfully placed.

In the Letters, one from my Aunt Mary,
With Peter and Paul,
It’s getting pretty full now.
I hope it will hold them all.

And in Revelation
An old weather forecast – history,
It looked like rain,
But it’s always a mystery.

But even after Revelation,
In “The Helps,” you see,
Church workers names and emails,
Email back – I hope, to help me.

And in the very, very back,
Scratch paper – a slew – for message notes,
To be placed in whichever Books
From which the sermons are, for us folks.

So now you see my system,
For this I’m getting a name.
My Bible is my file cabinet,
For this I am ashamed.

I Prayed For You Today

We have some new followers of this blog!   I’d like to welcome you and prayerfully hope that you will be blessed by the messages of the poems.

[Note: The poem below is not from the book, A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B. Mayes, 2011.  (The foreword  by Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor, International Christian Center, San Jose, California.)]

I Prayed For You Today

I prayed for you today.

I prayed for you today.
I couldn’t be there,
But I prayed for you today.

Your mother’s service –
For peace for you and your brother.
That God would lift you up,
That God would give you comfort.

I prayed for those presiding –
That they would say
Just the right words
To help and bless you.

I prayed thanking God
For your mother’s life,
And her kindness and
Faithfulness to Him.

I prayed thanking God
For sending His Son
So your mother can
Be with Him.

I prayed for you today.
I know He will answer
And comfort you
In every way.

I prayed for you today.

New Book Ministers To Readers

November 30, 2011

NEW BOOK MINISTERS TO READERS

” . . . creative energy evidenced through every line . . .” – Dr. P.T. Mammen

San Jose, California – Do you want to read Christian poetry that actually rhymes, and prayerfully will help you “rally ’round – a little closer to Heaven?”

Charles B. Mayes, M.A., a community volunteer, including being a Director of Media Relations, has released his first book, A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries), in a chapbook format, through his own Christian Poetry Publishing, with a release date of December 1, 2011.

Mayes’ goal is to inspire the reader to move closer to God. Twenty-two poems include Christmas, New Year’s,  and Easter verse, as well as plenty of devotional insight, and encouragement for Christian service. “My Bible Is My File Cabinet” is a humorous piece that reveals a “problem” of all too many.

The main aim is that the reader not only feels, but actually experiences God’s power in their life. It’s geared especially to Christians who need a boost in their walk with the Lord, and also to those seeking to learn more about the Christian life.

In his foreword, Dr. P.T. Mammen, Senior Pastor of International Christian Center San Jose, reveals that, “These poems evoke a sense of pure love for God, nature, and those around us. The reader is invited to enter into a unique thought process to appreciate everyday occurrences in life in perspective of time and eternity.”

Charles B. Mayes is a freelance writer living in San Jose, CA. He’s written for the Christian Standard, Northridger, CCC Caller, radio, TV, and websites. Mayes grew up in Muskogee, OK, and was graduated from Ozark Christian College Joplin, MO; California State University at Northridge; and Bethany University, Scotts Valley, CA, where he was also employed.

I would like to do some Book Readings in the San Jose, California area. If you are interested in having me come to your group, please fill out the form below and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Also, if you would like to purchase a copy of this new book (22 poem chapbook),  A New Year Resolution and Other Poems (including The Missionaries) by Charles B.
