Banning the Bible

Banning the Bible
Assembly Bill 2943

Are you worrying about
(Many may warn you!)
Possible Bible banning
Out in California?

If someone wants to change
Their lifestyle, extremely,
Bible counselors couldn’t help
Through this scheme.

But we who have the Bible now,
What are we doing with it?
Are we reading it daily?
Do we to a schedule commit?

Are we studying and applying it?
Do we with others discuss?
Reading the Bible,
And letting it read us?

Are you worrying
(Many may warn you!)
About possible Bible banning
Out in California?

If our religious freedoms are taken away – when people can’t get Biblical counseling or choose a Biblical help book – everyone loses.  While this is bad, we must read our Bibles now, when we can, and seek the Lord’s direction.

Mister, Are You Jesus? – A Preacher’s Story

Mister, Are You Jesus? – A Preacher’s Story

James 2:14-17

The lights lowering,
The sermon ending,
The preacher telling
An old story, wending.

A little orphaned boy
On a street corner, apples selling.
Most too busy to buy,
But “Apples – 5 cents!” he’s yelling.

The Great Depression –
Sales on his existence depending
Getting by as best he could.
Meager money for spending.

A businessman rushing by,
But not intending
Hit the apples, cascading.
Reaching down, bending.

Helping pick them up.
Paying much for the apples losing.
Handing the boy $20.00,
The situation defusing.

Sobbing and looking up,
Asking about the One who frees us,
Putting his small hand in big,
Crying out, “Mister, are you Jesus?”

The lights lowering,
The sermon ending,
The preacher telling
An old story, wending.

This poem is based on a preacher’s old illustration of which there are several versions.  It reminds us to think about how we are helping people in the name of Jesus Christ.  Telling someone to be warmed and fed doesn’t cut it.  Could someone mistake you for Jesus?
