A Christmas Eve Poem

A Christmas Eve Poem

Luke 2:14

This is my Christmas Eve poem.
I hope that it will bless,
With a few verses,
About this holiday loved best!

The carolers joyously singing,
From house to house they go.
The children eagerly sledding
In the new white fallen snow.

The stores remaining opened.
The crowds quickly flooding in.
The pop-up corner tree lots –
The evergreens are trimmed.

The church’s doors staying opened,
With a glow of lights within.
The creche stands in the front
Showing those who worship Him.

The gathered circle holding hands,
Of friends both old and new.
A Christmas prayer they pray.
It is something very true.

That peace on earth will come,
As we trust in Jesus Christ,
Born on that Christmas day
And for us was sacrificed.

The stores completely closed.
The sleds all put away.
The carolers quiet, quite.
No more trees to display.

The congregation leaves,
Feeling refreshed, renewed,
Into the cold night air,
An upswing in their mood.

That is my Christmas Eve poem.
I hope that it has blessed,
With a few verses,
About this holiday loved best!

Joyfully, All We People Come

Joyfully, All We People Come

Psalm 122:1
Psalm 100:4-5

Joyfully, all we people come
To the House of the Lord.
Worshiping Him and praising Him,
Singing with one accord.

Thanking Him, all of us today
For coming to show His love.
Seeing what He’s done before,
Leaving from Heav’n above.

Fellowship so very sweet,
Greeting all – everyone.
Smiling and laughing faces
Becoming one in the Son.

Listening now to His Word,
Quiet as we can be.
Letting His Spirit guide us
In His grace, we are freed!

Partaking of unleavened bread
And shimmering fruit of the vine.
Remembering Him on Calvary
As we spiritually dine.

Stirring waters once again
As many go down inside.
Showing us through Baptism
He rose right after He died.

Giving to God – a cheerful time,
With deep joy in our hearts.
Out-giving God, how can it be,
Who showed us from the start?

Praying for one another,
Taking hands across the aisle.
Asking for Christian unity
And help with all our trials.

Joyfully, all we people go
From the House of the Lord.
Telling ones all about Him
So they will be restored.

Thanking Him, all of us today
For coming to show His love.
Seeing what He’s done before,
Leaving from Heav’n above.

Anniversary 10 – Amen

By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.” Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through individuals, churches, and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing! So complimentary in the common faith!” Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

“I’m sorry that it took me so long to thank you for your wonderful gift of poetry.
As I was reading your poem, [Independence Day] the images of the people celebrating Independence Day and being proud of this day came to me as if I was watching a nice short movie. I was very moved.” Daisuke (Luke) S., Mountain View, CA.

MY APPRECIATION also to Samuel Rondón Acevedo who has done an excellent job translating  some of my poems into Spanish.

“I just read ‘Mistaken Identity.’  It is very moving, and one of your best.”  Joan M.-H., Muskogee, OK.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

“I really enjoy your poetry.  I will start sharing in my Sunday school classes.”  Travis B., Asbury, WV.

LORD WILLING, I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!” Steven C., Oregon.

God bless!

Catchya Later, God

Catchya Later, God

Hebrews 2:1

I’ll catchya later, God.
I got so much to do.
Helping with my family.
Things going on, new.

Gotta do the budget.
Gotta wash the clothes.
Put them in the dryer.
Trim the outside rose.

Take care of the mail.
File those important papers.
Drive the kids to school.
Make time for holiday capers.

Plan a birthday party.
Head for the bank.
Help my neighbor mow.
Feed fish in the tank.

I’ll catchya later, God.
Just carelessly
Slip sliding away
From daily victory.

Faux Painting

Faux Painting

My niece moved here recently from Colorado. Before the family of five arrived, I spent many hours making plans involving them and fantasizing about all the things we’d be able to do together now that they’d be close by. Of course they were not consulted and had no idea of my grand plans.

I’ve made such plans for years for all of my family. My sister does the same, and we consult regularly about our wishful thinking. We realized that we learned this habit from our mom, who made plans for us and our families involving increasingly elaborate details–the older she became, the more time she had to let her imagination run wild. Now we are retired and have more time, especially in the long months of pandemic confinement, and guess what? We now do the same.

For the last few years we’ve referred to this consuming pastime as “painting”– using our well-worn paint brushes to create an ideal picture of what we want to happen and then place everyone in it. By the time we’ve completed a picture, it is no longer a sketch but a veritable masterpiece using every color on the palette. This is a clear example of the Murphy’s Law that says the job expands to the amount of time at hand! According to Proverbs 17:24, “A discerning man keeps wisdom in view, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.” The extent of these musings is not only foolish but also a sure set-up for disappointment.

I read a large scale study that showed participants spent on average 47% of their waking time daydreaming. It distracts our attention from the present and focuses on what we’d like to see in the future, a stream of consciousness that detaches us from real life and responsibilities. Proverbs 19:21 states, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Though a little daydreaming can be a delightful escape, it sounds like I need to stop planning other peoples’ lives, recalibrate my thinking, and set my focus on the truth of God’s Word.

In Revelation 21 and 22, the apostle John paints a detailed picture of the dazzling beauty of the New Jerusalem where all believers will dwell with God for all eternity. Unlike my faux painting, this picture is God’s truth. The Bible provides clear instructions on how to get ready. I’m trying hard to put my paint brush away at least most of the time and think about that.

Independence Day

Independence Day

It’s the Fourth of July,
Called just July 4th.
It’s Independence Day,
Celebrating America’s start!

The bass drum beating.
The band starting the parade.
A red, white, and blue banner
Showing the way.

American Legion members,
Striding right in step,
Bearing the colors
Still with a lot of pep.

Citizen’s costumed on a float
To honor soldiers’ stories,
The Veterans History Project,*
Brave persons, many in glory.

The crowd cheers,
The crowd applauds,
Recalling freedom,
Thanking God.

Enjoying picnics,
Child and adult, all.
Hot dogs, chips, watermelon,
Then some softball.

And then in the evening,
It’s an American tradition,
Displaying fireworks
In the air – ignition.

The Fourth of July
Comes only once a year,
But a day to remember
For America, very dear.

NOT Alone

NOT Alone

When I first moved to The Villages in late 2016, it was the first time in my life I ever lived alone.  I soon visited our Chapel, but only attended a few times before my cancer returned.  Following surgery and various treatments, I experienced horrendous after effects and multiple hospitalizations, and was homebound nearly 2 years – home alone in my new home where I knew almost no one.

God had already put me through prior periods of “training” with a brain tumor, prior cancer, and the heartbreak of divorce.  I KNEW he was faithful then and that he would be faithful again.  You may be feeling lonely during these extended months of pandemic isolation, and you too can recall how God has sustained you in the past.  Psalm 77:11-13, I will call to mind the deeds of the Lord; yea, I will remember thy wonders of old.  I will meditate on all thy work, and muse on thy mighty deeds.  Thy way, O God, is holy.  What god is great like our God?

Focus on God is a deliberate, conscious CHOICE.  It’s okay to get on the Pity Pot, but NOT to stay on it!  Our two choices are to 1)  remain tearful and fearful, thus adding to our problems by dwelling on them; or 2) trust the Lord.  As the words of the old hymn say, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.  Choose to abandon the negativity.  2 Cor 10:5, …take every thought captive

A wondrous part of being a Christian is being part of the Body of Christ,  The family of God for me includes two congregations I belonged to before moving here.  When I needed prayer and support, the Chapel Prayer Team was there for me even though I did not yet know them.  All three of these church families upheld me in prayer.  We truly are NOT alone.  Even Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold him up (Ex 17).

God has specifically placed each one of us in our particular homes.  This time of continuing social restrictions is the perfect time to show our neighbors that they are not alone–someone cares!  This past year is the first time I’ve ever made daily walks a habit, an easy thing to do with all the extra time and living in this beautiful locale brimming with God’s creation.  As I leave my front door each day, I pray that God will make me a blessing to someone, lead me to someone who needs a smile or encouragement, that he’ll guide my steps. Often I do pass others for such “divine appointments” just as you may do.  Pray for boldness to speak his truth and be prepared to give account of the hope that is within … (1 Pet 4:5). We must use our words to give hope and give God glory.  We KNOW God is faithful.

Our USA Congress Prayer and Our American Prayer

icon033 - Praying Hands 5

Our USA Congress Prayer

We should pray for all in Congress
To know Jesus Christ as their friend.
To know Him personally from within.
To follow God’s Word, start to end.

Jesus Christ is their only Hope
For Salvation of their soul.
To live with God in Heaven
Should be their priority goal.

We need to pray for all of Congress
Who do not follow Him.
He is the only light they have.
Now their trust and Salvation needs to begin.

Our American Prayer

If we all follow Jesus in the USA,
Then our freedom will come back,
Just as it has been taken away.
Pray! . . . Pray! . . Pray!

Curtain Up!

Curtain Up!

Curtain Up on the stage of life!
This New Year’s drama starts
With you on the stage,
As the foot and spotlights
Both shine bright.

Not a lark.
You’re excited, yet fearful
In this program to embark.

All thespians ready to move
Through each scene
With dilemmas quite a few.
Plots thickens as characters careen.

You trust your Heavenly Director,
The Lord Jesus Christ.
Dealing with the lying antagonist.
Dealing with the sacrifice.

Whether showstopper or upstaged.
Whether dialogue or soliloquy.
No bit parts here.
The finale is Heaven’s eternity.

Curtain Up on the stage of life!
A New Year – looking ahead.
With Christ, nothing to dread.

I usually write something here about my poems.  The inspiration for this one comes from two persons.

The first is my high school communication teacher, Joan [/Jo-Ann/] Murray-Hogan.  She taught English, speech, radio and TV broadcasting, and drama; and was active in productions for many years.  We enjoy talking on the phone from time to time.

The second is Steve Dini, a spokesman and on-camera talent, who has been teaching high school film studies, radio broadcasting, and drama for many years.  I met Steve during an internship I did at KICU-TV.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

Holding Jesus

Holding Jesus

Luke 2:22-40

The day after Christmas,
Still relishing joy and cheer,
Thinking of Simeon and Anna,
Who both met baby Jesus, dear.

Devout Simeon asked to see
The Messiah’s face
Before he died, then was answered –
Holding God’s salvation and grace.

Joseph and Mary marveled
At what he said.
Simeon blessed them,
But warned Mary of what’s ahead.

Aged Prophet Anna, a widow for many years,
Daily at the Temple fasting and praying,
So pleased to see Jesus,
Thanksgiving and redemption saying.

We can also hold Jesus.
Have we been wanting to start,
In expectation and hope,
To hold Him in our hearts?
