Anniversary 10 – Amen

By – Charles B. Mayes

IN 2008 SOME HARD CIRCUMSTANCES opened my eyes to my total dependence on God. From this emerged my ministry of writing Christian poetry readings seriously and frequently.

“I do enjoy the poems and they do always point to Jesus.” Anonymous

THROUGH THE YEARS as I’ve been on the website, I also distributed printed readings through individuals, churches, and the LifeWay Christian Store community center.

“Love your poetry writing! So complimentary in the common faith!” Chanel B., DE.

I WANT TO THANK all my email and WordPress followers, LinkedIn readers, and visitors to my website for your continued support.

“I’m sorry that it took me so long to thank you for your wonderful gift of poetry.
As I was reading your poem, [Independence Day] the images of the people celebrating Independence Day and being proud of this day came to me as if I was watching a nice short movie. I was very moved.” Daisuke (Luke) S., Mountain View, CA.

MY APPRECIATION also to Samuel Rondón Acevedo who has done an excellent job translating  some of my poems into Spanish.

“I just read ‘Mistaken Identity.’  It is very moving, and one of your best.”  Joan M.-H., Muskogee, OK.

ALSO THANKS to my sisters, Nancy and Cherry, and Pastor P.T. Mammen for their encouragement from the beginning.  I appreciate the excellent editing of my wife, Dolores.  I thank my nephew, William, for helping greatly with the domain.

“I really enjoy your poetry.  I will start sharing in my Sunday school classes.”  Travis B., Asbury, WV.

LORD WILLING, I want to continue to minister through these poetry readings.

“You keep writing, I’ll keep reading!” Steven C., Oregon.

God bless!

The Pumpkin Walk

The Pumpkin Walk

Hurry, hurry, hurry  🙂
Come children and parents, too.
It’s Pumpkin Walk time again,
For everyone like you.

At the church –
Kids “treated” with games.
Safe fun – no one “tricked.”
The music plays shoom, shoom.

‘Round, ’round, ’round
Until the music stops.
Around the chairs they march,
Quickly – chop chop.

Pumpkins for children,
From a short or loooong walk.
“Listen for your number.”
“Be careful, don’t you drop!”

Chomp, chomp, chomp,
Popcorn, and candy made like cotton.
Apple cider to wash it down,
This day won’t be forgotten.

Ha, ha, ha,
A funny puppet show.
Then the Gospel message,
For the kids to know.

Slowly, slowly, slowly 😦
Go children and parents, too.
‘Twas Pumpkin Walk time again,
For everyone like you.

The Pumpkin Walk / Harvest Festival / Fair / Celebration, or Hallelujah Night, etc. are used by many churches as a safe alternative to Halloween.  Plus this is an outreach to the community.   I’ve taken some of those Harvest Festival and school Pumpkin Walk memories and put them in the above poem.

I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Halloween Outreach

Halloween Outreach

(I Corinthians 9:22)

The church down the street
Has a yearly Halloween treat
For the neighbor children
Who think it’s pretty neat.

Inside the children sit
Watching a ventriloquist
Telling the Gospel story
Putting on it a new twist.

Some are over playing games:
A Pumpkin bean bag toss,
Yellow numbered ducks in a pond,
A Do-It-Yourself painted Cross.

There’s a bouncy house
On the playground.
A long eager line,
Up and down, up and down

Costumed kids walking by.
Adults doing a prayerful act –
Giving out candy
And Halloween gospel tracts.

The outreach is held every year
To take something secular
And make it into something
Godly spectacular!

When churches reach out to children and their families then wonderful things happen for them, and for the church itself. The mission of the church is to touch lives with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all ways possible.

“I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.”  (Holy Bible – I Corinthians 9:22 – NIV)

Harvest Festival Time

Harvest Festival Time

Hurry, hurry, hurry,  🙂
Come children and parents, too.
Harvest Festival time again,
For everyone like you.

At the church –
All “treated” in front of the rooms.
Safe celebration time – no one “tricked’’,
The music plays shoom, shoom.

‘Round, ’round, ’round,
Until the music stops.
Around the chairs they march,
It’s the Pumpkin Walk.

Pumpkins for boys and girls,
A short or loooong walk.
Listen for your number,
Be careful, don’t you drop!

In the –> m—> a—-> z—–> e.
Through, then Turn, and Through,
To find the end is difficult –
And some might never do?

Chomp, chomp, chomp,
Popcorn; and candy made like cotton.
Apple cider to wash it down,
This day won’t be forgotten.

Wham, wham, wham,
Down go the bowling pins.
Whish, whish, whish,
Fly a disc farther, then you win!

Bounce, bounce, bounce,
Go the children in their groups.
In and out of the jump house,
Spring right up to the roof.

Ha, ha, ha,
A funny puppet show.
Then the Gospel message,
For the kids to know.

Slowly, slowly, slowly,  😦
Go children and parents, too.
Harvest Festival time again,
For everyone like you.
